Writing Talks : An Interview With Jan Romes

3 Aug

Hey guys, welcome to the newest Writing Talks interview on the blog, and this time it’s with the huggy and amazing author, Jan Romes. She’s the lovable person behind books like Stay Close, Novac! and One Small Fib, among others. That said, so as not to delay you all from reading, let’s get right to it!

Interview Questions and Answers

1. What does the digital publishing phenomenon mean to you?

I agree, it is a phenomenon – one that allows me to fail or succeed depending on how much effort I put into it. I love the latitude to experiment with what works or doesn’t work.  The only contract involved is the one I make with myself – to learn the publishing world from the ground up and to offer the world a chance enjoy my work.

2. Are there any writing tips you would want to share?

I only have one tip to share. Pay attention to that special style/writing voice that sets you apart from all others and be true to it.

Also, can you talk about your daily writing routine?

My daily routine? I would like to shout that I’m this incredible business woman who has everything organized and planned out. Yep, I would truly like to shout that from the rafters.

But you guessed it! I’m a fly by the seat-of-my-pants writer whose world revolves around coffee, social media, and Microsoft Word (not necessarily in that order). I do try to write every day – sometimes it’s a page, sometimes it’s several pages. I don’t set unrealistic goals for myself by trying to reach a specific word count each day.

I do, however, give myself a target date to finish the book.

3. Tell us about your work. What pushed you to write the things you wrote?

I should probably describe me and that will explain everything. I’m a happy-go-lucky personality that is driven by romance and humor. I read a lot and have been a day-dreamer for as long as I can remember. I grew up with eight zany siblings. They were, and continue to be, a wealth of information about life.

At times, that life involved conflict, chaos, and a ton of laughs. I paid attention and honed in on stories about boyfriends, girlfriends, first dates, etcetera. Even when they didn’t want me to (haha).

From all that, I’ve developed the joy of deciphering expressions, mannerisms, and personal style. I love to listen to how people express themselves – the words they use, the inflection. And I married a very witty man who speaks in metaphors and makes me laugh. My writing genre clearly had to be contemporary romance laced with humor.

4. Are there any stories, quotes or anecdotes which inspire your writing?

I may very well be that odd duck that isn’t inspired by any one story, quote, or anecdote – I’m inspired by everything!

5. What did writing teach you?

Patience! It’s an incredible journey that takes time. It’s a learning process that involves trial and error.

6. Any special messages for your readers?

I’d like to thank them for reading my stories! And I hope they enjoy my flawed characters and the crazy situations I throw them into.
